Helping Others Globally

The FAUSA Charity Program concentrates on the needs of women and children with special focus on the Americas.  Beginning in 2004, FAUSA has supported:

  • A literacy program in Guyana
  • Purchased science equipment for a new school in Ribralta, Bolivia
  • Provided backpacks and school supplies to children in Bogotá, Colombia
    • Since 1997, 990 backpacks filled with notebooks, pencils, rulers, and more have been distributed by The American Women’s Club of Bogotá on behalf of FAUSA and The FAWCO Foundation.

  • Estancia Fraternidad in Oaxaca, Mexico, offers housing to the families of patients undergoing long-term hospital treatments, and often to the patients themselves once they are out of hospital.  Poor patients and families often have to come long distances for treatment in Oaxaca due to the inadequate medical services in their communities.  They often know no one in the city and can’t afford expensive accommodations during the lengthy treatment. Estancia recently expanded its services to include an ambulance, a medical dispensary and burial assistance. In 2006 it provided assistance to 28,500 family members from 29 districts and 570 municipalities.
  • El Maestro En Casa is a literacy program broadcast by Radio San Miguel in the Amazon region of northern Bolivia. The mission of the program is to teach reading, writing, basic math, critical thinking and community development skills to adults living in remote tribal villages.  FAUSA has proposed this organization for a 2010 FAWCO Development Grant.

Working Together with FAWCO

Continuing its collaboration with FAWCO, FAUSA is proud to be the principal sponsor of the 2010 FAWCO Foundation Hope Through Education Development Grant, for projects that promote literacy and support academic studies for disadvantaged children of all ages.  The recipient of this grant, School Aid, operating in South Africa, was announced at the FAWCO Conference in Boston in March 2010.

FAUSA has been an active collaborator in FAWCO philanthropic programs for over five years:

  • FAUSA members actively supported the FAWCO Millennium Goal Malaria Net Project
  • In response to the Hurricane Katrina Emergency Relief Fund, FAUSA coordinated the selection of Dillard University in the Gentilly district of New Orleans as the recipient of the $20,000 donated by FAUSA and FAWCO clubs and club members.  The funds provided for a new study room at the University.

FAWCO/FAUSA Member Donation - Making a Difference !

At the Boston Conference in March 2010, Shirley van Ooijen (FAWCO Counselor, FAUSA) generously donated $3000 to FAWCO with the request that we "use it to make a difference." FAWCO contrib-uted it to the Grameen Foundation for funding microfinancing loans.

We received an update from Sandra Adams, Vice-President for External Affairs. Mrs. Adams says "Our work in Latin America is currently focused on Peru, Bolivia, Mexico, Haiti, Guatemala and Colombia, with a total of almost $2 million in loan capital we have provided to microfi-nance institutions so they can make loans to poor women.

Since the average loan is less than $200, you can imagine the impact we are able to make! We will apply the FAWCO funds specifically to a project we are completing with a microfinance institution in Peru to help them recruit and retain highly motivated staff. Microfinance staff are vital to the loan process. Loan officers usually are responsible for between 400 and 500 borrowers. They encourage poor women to apply for loans, help them plan to create or expand tiny busi-nesses, and distribute the loans and collect the loan payments. They travel considerable distances, often on motorbikes or bicycles, to reach women in rural villages, carrying cash through sometimes dangerous areas."
