The FAWCO Alumnae USA Committee was founded in 1995 when Mona Garcia returned to Texas from Madrid, Spain. She was appointed Alumnae Committee Chair by then FAWCO President, Becky Tan. The idea was not new as a group of women from Connecticut, New York and New Jersey, had several years before formed an Alumnae Committee called FAWCO West. The concept of the FAWCO Alumnae USA Committee, however, was new with all 50 States and Canada included, involving annual dues, a quarterly newsletter and an annual directory. The organization immediately grew, numbering in the hundreds, with membership spread all over the USA and Canada.
During the FAWCO Conference at Dublin in 1997, the FAWCO Alumnae USA Committee was granted the opportunity to host the first FAWCO Conference ever held in the USA since FAWCO's founding in 1931. The site was agreed upon and Washington, DC became that historic venue. Fifteen Alumnae Committee members immediately became the FAWCO Conference Planning Committee and planning for this historic conference began in Dublin.
The FAWCO 2000 Washington, DC Conference was a great success and a membership-builder for the FAWCO Alumnae USA Committee as well as for FAWCO. During the course of planning the Washington DC FAWCO 2000 Conference, discussion also began regarding the possibility of the FAWCO Alumnae USA Committee becoming a FAWCO club. The idea was presented to the FAWCO Board and FAWCO agreed to change it's bylaws, thus allowing the FAWCO Alumnae USA Committee to apply to become the first and only FAWCO club to be formed within the territorial limits of the United States. A vote was taken at the FAWCO London Conference in1999 to allow the FAWCO Alumnae USA Committee to apply for affiliate membership as a FAWCO club. The status to apply was granted. FAWCO Alumnae USA then wrote by-laws, held an election for officers and applied for membership. Membership was granted on May 1, 2000 and the organization was then incorporated in the state of Texas.
